The White Balance Menu of a Fuji s5600

Snow White and the Seven Modes

Every camera has around seven modes to balance the white. Two are Automatic (the camera does it for you), the other six being manual (you have to choose them according to the setting you are currently photographing).

The first mode, dubbed AUTO corrects the white digitally. In other words, the camera does the work for you. This is not always the best option as it tends to make the image more cold on certain occasions.

The second mode adjusts the balance "manually", with a press of the shutter button. Beware, as it will display OVER if the image is overexposed and UNDER if the image is underexposed.

The third mode (first of the truly manual modes) adjust the white according to clear skies, so use this when there are no clouds.

Cloudy, the fourth mode is mainly used during overcast, when there is little light available.

Fifth on the list is Fluorescent, with 3-4 modes according to camera. Use it when taking photos of neon-based sources of light.

Fluorescent White Balance

No. 8-9 (depends on camera brand) is Incandescent. Perfect when shooting indoors.

Note that these modes are available only on the M (manual) setting. The other settings adjust the white balance automatically.

Step I - Engaging the camera
Turn your camera on. This should be a simple trick. If in doubt, look for the ON switch.

Step II - Selecting the White Balance
This tutorial is tailored according to my Fuji Finepix s5600. On other cameras, the location of the WB may differ. The WB selection option is found in the menu, ONLY ON MANUAL (M) MODE.

Step III - Preview
Note that after you've selected an option, the image reacts accordingly, either warming up or cooling down.
Having selected an option, it's time to shoot! Below are some samples of what each mode looks like compared to the original, unbalanced image.
